Construction Abounds In and Around the Corcoran Neighborhood

Lake Street Reconstruction continues with heavy activity around the Cedar and Longfellow Avenue intersections. Meanwhile, two major building projects are well underway in the adjacent East Phillips Neighborhood at the Hi-Lake Shopping Center. The photo shows foundation work on developer Steve Wellington’s new mixed use project at 21st and Lake. According to the signage, Corridor Flats will feature 36 for-sale housing units above a grocery store and underground tenant parking. The promotional website lists prices going up from $140,000, and lists 9 of the units as ‘sold.’
Meanwhile, just to the east on the same parcel, the concrete block shell of a new multi-tenant retail building is being erected by the same developer. CNO understands this building will contain the beloved Pineda Tacos restaurant that occupied the recently razed ‘Pizza Hut’ building, a coffee shop, and at least one more food retailer. Hi-Lake Liquors may also find a new home in this building, and its current space in the shopping center building will be taken by Subway restaurant, whose stand-alone building on the site will be demolished. CNO and Corcoran residents did not have official input on these projects, as Corcoran’s northern boundary is Lake Street, though Wellington and his architect met with CNO’s Land Use & Transportation Committee last fall for several informational meetings.
A road renovation project is also underway at 35th and Cedar, where construction crews told CNO staff they were digging to install new electrical conduit that will accommodate new, cantilever arm-type stoplight supports which will be installed in coming weeks. |
