CNO Mission, History & Purpose, Structure, & Goals
Mission
We the Corcoran residents, in all our diversity, strive to
strengthen, improve and protect the unique character, livability, and
social fabric of our neighborhood. We endeavor to encourage and
empower all residents, businesses and property owners to unite in
addressing our common issues.
History & Purpose
Corcoran Neighborhood Organization is a citizen participation
organization recognized by the City of Minneapolis. It was founded
over 25 years ago in response to the demolition of Corcoran School, on
the community's desire to establish a park at the school site. CNO
continues to address community issues that affect residents of Corcoran
Neighborhood. CNO serves as an advocate, voice, and information source
on civic affairs and for the betterment of the community. Over the
years, CNO has developed a variety of programs and events designed to
improve the neighborhood's housing stock, promote economic development,
increase community safety and livability, address blight, support youth
and family activities and at-risk youth, and build relationships among
all community members.
After decades of service to the neighborhood, CNO began to plan
for the City of Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP)
in 1994. Three years later CNO received approval for their NRP Phase I
Plan and began implementation. In 2003, CNO underwent a formal
evaluation of their work and entered into an agreement with NRP to plan
for Phase II. CNO's Phase II plan has been approved and implementation
is underway.
Structure
Corcoran Neighborhood Organization is made up of the following
committees or program areas: Housing, Land Use & Transportation,
Outreach & Events, Midtown Public Market, Midtown Community
Restorative Justice, and the Midtown Latino Organizing Project.
Additional committees are formed to address particular, short-term
concerns when necessary
Committees, which meet monthly, make recommendations to CNO's
Executive Board. At its monthly meetings the Executive Board reviews
and votes on these recommendations and thus determines policy for the
organization. Decisions relevant to the entire neighborhood are
discussed at CNO's quarterly General Membership meetings.
