New home improvement rebates are now available but limited

"Energy Saver Rebates" of up to $10,000 are now available from the State of Minnesota through the Federal Stimulus. Make qualifying energy improvements to your home this winter--these could include windows, doors, insulation, water heaters, and heating systems--and receive a 35% rebate. Funds are available first-come, first-served, and local officials say they are expected to be used up within 2 to 3 months. Improvements must meet certain energy efficiency criteria to be eligible for the rebate. To access the rebate, property owners must qualify and take out a Fix-Up Fund loan, which has a maximum loan amount of $35,000 and a maximum term of 20 years with an interest rate of 5.99% as of Nov. 22, 2009. The Energy Saver Rebate, the Fix-Up Fund loan and other home improvement loans are handled locally by the Center for Energy and Environment, a nonprofit organization. School board eyes headquarters sites including 2225 East Lake

The board of the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) plans to relocate its administrative headquarters, and met in December to review proposals for 8 possible locations. One option would utilize MPS's 2225 East Lake property in the Corcoran neighborhood, where the recently-shuttered building had housed MPS's Anishinabe Academy until that program was relocated in 2009. At the December meeting, school board members gave initial direction to MPS staff, and will reconvene in early 2010 to make a final decision. For 7 years, the school board has generously allowed use of 2225 East Lake by the Midtown Farmers' Market. CNO continues to work with local government and developers to seek a permanent, shared home for the market within redevelopment of the 6-1/2 acre site, in accordance with the City-adopted Corcoran Midtown Revival Plan. MPS has said it will sell the site for redevelopment soon, but this depends on the outcome of the board's decision about the headquarters location. Related StarTribune article.

U.S. Census jobs are now available in your neighborhood

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Best of all, census takers work right in their own communities. Census taker jobs are excellent for people who want to work part-time, those who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community. City adopts final 2010 budget, keeps Crime Prevention staff

The Minneapolis City Council has finished work on its 2010 budget. A notable portion of the deliberations focused on the Police Department, where the layoff of officers, crime prevention specialists, mounted patrols, and other personnel were all considered as options to balance a shrinking Police budget. But crime prevention specialists including Karen Notsch, whose service district includes the Corcoran neighborhood, will keep their jobs. And while the adopted budget will trim 25 police officers, the city has applied for federal monies that should allow the rehiring of about half of them. Related StarTribune article.

Experience La Natividad, a unique holiday pageant

"La Natividad" returns December 10 through 20 to In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, 1500 E. Lake St. Initially conceived to bring all residents of the area together, the performance incorporates the Mexican holiday tradition of Las Posadas. Throughout the performance, the audience moves from place to place and becomes part of the story, eventually accompanying Maria and José through the streets as they look for refuge. The procession ends with a Nativity and a fiesta complete with music and food. Tickets sell out fast every year. Learn more at their website or call 612-721-2535.
