Greenway, neighborhoods oppose proposed Xcel expansion in Midtown

Midtown GreenwaySeveral community groups have voiced formal opposition to Xcel Energy's plan to build new electric transmission lines along or near the Midtown Greenway and two new substations, including one near Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue. Xcel officials have stated they will submit a project permit application to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in January, which would likely trigger a public review process. The Midtown Greenway Coalition, at its December 3 meeting, passed a resolution "currently opposing" the project, citing its potential negative impact on economic development and other concerns. The resolution calls on Xcel to delay the project, demonstrate sufficient need for it, and to explore alternative options. Several neighborhood organizations including Corcoran and East Phillips have passed similar statements of opposition, and Midtown Phillips has called for a delay to the project. This newsletter publicized a series of informational open houses on the project that occurred in October. Learn more about Xcel's proposed Hiawatha project. Help advocate for a permanent Midtown Farmers' Market

Join a team of citizens who will advocate for a permanent physical space for the outdoor, seasonal Midtown Farmers’ Market at its current location at the southwest corner of Lake Street and Hiawatha. 2225 E. Lake is also home to Anishinabe Academy, but the school district is reassessing the future of the school, and has signaled that the building and land might be sold for redevelopment as early as 2009. Midtown Farmers' Market supporters are invited to a December 11 meeting at 7:00 a.m. to pursue Policy-related strategy, and/or to a December 15 meeting at 6:00 p.m. to pursue Site strategy. Both meetings will take place at the CNO office. Contact CNO staff to learn more.
