Neighbors will discuss school site, farmers' market future, Xcel expansion

2225 E. Lake St.For six years, the Midtown Farmers' Market has enjoyed use of the school district property at 2225 E. Lake St, current home of Anishinabe Academy. The school district is reassessing the future of this property, and has signaled that the building and land might be sold for redevelopment as early as 2009. What will this mean for the farmers' market and for this land parcel, which is a gateway and cornerstone of our neighborhood? The Corcoran Midtown Revival Plan, amended to the Minneapolis Plan in 2002, calls for future housing and commercial uses to compliment light rail transit, as well as a farmers' market.

Join CNO in helping the neighborhood prepare for redevelopment of 2225 E. Lake Street, identify and connect with neighborhood stake holders, revisit prospective development partners, and explore options for the future location of our farmers’ market--including 2225 E. Lake, of course.

This meeting of CNO's Land Use & Transportation Committee and Housing Committee will take place at 6:00 pm on Monday, November 24 at the CNO office. Everyone is invited.

We'll also discuss Xcel Energy's proposed Hiawatha expansion project, which would build a substation near Hiawatha and Lake and run new power lines west to Interstate 35-W along a route to be determined. We'll consider the positions taken by other community groups on this project, including East Phillips and the Greenway Coalition, and consider the potential impact on our neighborhood.

Prepare for Thanksgiving at encore farmers' market

The all-local, seasonal Midtown Farmers' Market will convene one last time in 2008, to help you prepare for Thanksgiving. Stop by the usual location on Wednesday, November 26th from 3:00 to 5:30 pm for pumpkins and squash, honey, onions and root vegetables, organic eggs, wild rice, holiday candles, and more. Local, organic turkeys and artisan bread will be available but must be pre-ordered. Click on farmers' market to learn more, and to learn how to become a Friend of the Market to help sustain fresh, local flavor in south Minneapolis each season.

Learn to solve problems and prevent crime on your block

The Minneapolis Police 3rd Precinct will offer its free Block Leader training workshop on Thursday, November 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the 3rd Precinct Community Room, 3000 Minnehaha Ave. This workshop comes highly recommended by CNO staff, and will equip participants to organize or improve their block club, work with their Crime Prevention Specialist, and solve problems effectively. Call 612-673-2856 to RSVP. Also, if you'd like to receive free crime alerts by e-mail from the Police Department on issues related to the Corcoran neighborhood, click here to register.

Help create a 2009 Policing Plan for your neighborhood

The Minneapolis Police Department is seeking input from Corcoran residents on a Neighborhood Policing Plan for 2009. What would you like to see the police department focus on in your neighborhood in 2009? What would you like to see as a neighborhood/police partnership in your neighborhood in 2009? 28 residents weighed in on these topics at CNO’s General Membership meeting on November 10. The Minneapolis Police Department Third Precinct will continue to collect input until December 14. Click here to take the survey.

Prevent graffiti this winter, $200 grants expire soon

$200 grants are still available to prevent graffiti at Corcoran properties. To break up the blank, open surface that taggers look for, many residents have put simple greenery in front of the garage. One practical owner simply nailed a trellis to the garage and skipped the greenery altogether. Other garages feature a mini mural created by students from Anishinabe Academy; several are still available at CNO. Is your privacy fence a magnet? Modify it. Need more ideas? CNO volunteer and landscape designer Russ Henry (call 612-227-0115) has some cold-weather prevention ideas, while Eric at CNO can help with grant funds.

Phone seminar offers help with foreclosure
