Have a happy and safe Halloween! When trick-or-treating, make sure kids have an adult leader, stay with the group, and stick to a planned route on familiar streets, and at familiar homes. Carry a glow stick or flashlight. If you’re giving treats at your home, turn on your porch lights. Remove trip hazards and wet leaves from your sidewalk and porch floor, and place pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns in a safe spot.

Xcel will share plans for new substations and lines

Xcel Energy is proposing an expansion of its south Minneapolis electric infrastructure to handle growing demand. The Hiawatha Project would add a new substation near Lake St and Hiawatha Ave to connect to the existing transmission line along Hiawatha, and new transmission lines along or near the 29th Street Midtown Greenway. Xcel will host open house meetings to provide information and field questions on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 12:00 to 2:00 and 5:00 to 7:00 pm, and on Thursday, Nov. 6 (same times) in the Greenway Conference Room of the Midtown Global Market, 920 E. Lake St. An additional presentation at 3:00 pm, both days, will focus on the issues of electric and magnetic fields (EMF). To learn more click here.

Empty Bowls will raise awareness, funds for hunger

Powderhorn Empty Bowls is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Powderhorn Park Building, 3400 15th Ave. S. At this community meal, friends and neighbors are invited to choose a bowl from hundreds donated by local potters, including students in the Park’s ceramics program. After making a donation, attendees fill their bowls with soup and bread. At the end of the meal, participants leave with their empty bowl as a reminder that there are bowls that need filling year-round in our community. Proceeds will benefit the food shelf at the Division of Indian Work on Lake Street and the Kidz Cafe in the Park building, sponsored by the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning this winter

The Minneapolis Fire Department is reminding residents to prevent exposure to carbon monoxide (CO). CO is an odorless gas that can be emitted by a variety of household appliances and can be fatal at high levels of concentration. The following steps can reduce the risk of CO poisoning: install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors within ten feet of all sleeping rooms or bedrooms, make sure that your boiler or furnace is clean and working properly, ensure that wood burning appliances have a proper draft and ventilation, never heat your home with the stove or fueled equipment, or portable kerosene heaters, and do not idle cars or other motorized equipment in attached garages.
