EPA selects final arsenic cleanup plan, schedules public meetings

Arsenic Clean UpAfter considering several alternatives and weighing public comment, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected its final cleanup plan for south Minneapolis properties contaminated with windblown arsenic by the former pesticide plant at 28th and Hiawatha. Each of the alternatives involved the replacement of soil at specific properties based on whether concentrations found in samples were above an identified limit. Soil has been replaced at about 200 properties so far, with 500 more due for cleanup over 2 to 4 years per the final cleanup plan. The EPA will host an open house to share more details and answer residents' questions on Tuesday, October 21, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Midtown YWCA, 2121 E. Lake St. Other meeting times are scheduled; find times and other information here.
