Book Sale and Mural Celebration planned for Saturday, October 4

book saleYou are invited to two big events on Saturday, October 4! The fifth annual Corcoran book sale will offer thousands of low-price books as well as baked goods and raffle drawings. After binging on the bargains from 9:00 to 4:00 at CNO, 3451 Cedar Ave S, head 3 doors down to Susan Hensel Gallery to celebrate Corcoran Murals with project leader Elise Kyllo.

Elise and over 400 volunteers created 13 new murals in the Corcoran neighborhood over the last year and a half. Meet Elise, volunteers, and other neighbors at a free reception at Susan Hensel Gallery, 3441 Cedar Ave S, which will include a running slide show of the volunteer muralists in action, refreshments for a free-will donation (all proceeds benefit Elise!), and free admission to All Things Electoral, the current art exhibition at Susan Hensel Gallery.

October 4 Neighborhood Book Sale still needs volunteers, books

The CNO office is still accepting quality books for the Oct. 4 Book Sale. Want to meet some book-minded neighbors? Volunteers are needed to help sort books from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the CNO office, and help is needed the day of the Sale. Contact Alicia at CNO to learn more.

Choose to Reuse with valuable coupons throughout October

Police offer October trainings on block leadership, personal safety

The Minneapolis Police 3rd Precinct will offer its free Block Leader training workshop on both October 1 and October 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, at the 3rd Precinct Community Room, 3000 Minnehaha Ave. This workshop comes highly recommended by CNO staff, and will equip participants to organize or improve their block club, work with their Crime Prevention Specialist, and solve problems effectively. Click here to learn more, or call 612-673-2856 to RSVP. The Police Department will also offer a free Personal Safety workshop on October 16. Click here to learn more.

City Council votes to centralize control of neighborhood funding

Against the urging of the community through an extensive series of public hearings and community meetings, the Minneapolis City Council acted on Sept. 26 to centralize control of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) under a new City department overseen by the City Coordinator, who is appointed by the Mayor and City Council, for the next phase of NRP funding. For 20 years the NRP has been governed by a multi-jurisdictional policy board. 12th Ward Council Member Sandy Colvin Roy was in the minority voting against the Council actions, stating, "you cannot centralize creativity." Since 1990 the NRP has funded resident-prioritized improvements while leveraging many thousands of dollars and volunteer hours through the work of independent organizations representing all 81 Minneapolis neighborhoods. Revenue for the next phase of the NRP will begin in 2011, through tax increment districts authorized this year by the state legislature.

Prevent Foreclosure, attend free educational workshop

The Minnesota Home Ownership Center will offer a series of free informational workshops for homeowners who may be at risk of foreclosure, or wish to learn more about the foreclosure process in Minnesota. Dates include Tuesday, October 7 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at East Lake Library, 2727 E. Lake Street. Attendees can ask questions and get free, confidential advice from non-profit foreclosure counselors and mortgage lenders. The events are open house-style, so stop by any time during the event. Presentations providing general information on foreclosure will repeat throughout the evening. Learn more about the workshops and other foreclosure-related resources here.

Also note: Corcoran's Housing Committee has been tracking boarded and distressed properties including ownership and for-sale information--contact Eric at CNO to learn more about a property on your block.
