New Community Mural Unveiled at Cedar Avenue Shell Station

Three days, 40 pairs of hands, and a few gallons of donated paint transformed the gas station at 34th and Cedar last weekend. Local artist Elise Kyllo designed and led efforts to paint the bright sun, bees, flowers, and poetry. “The mural on the wall is just a glimpse of its greater value,” Elise explained. “This garden of color came out of new friendships made and the joy, hope, and pride of a community effort.” The work was complete in time for a Sunday evening celebration that featured food, mingling, and music amongst 80 attendees.

Midtown Greenway Now Connects to the Mississippi; Coalition Seeks Corcoran Rep.

Since the recent completion and opening of Phase III construction, the Midtown Greenway now connects the Chain of Lakes and the Mississippi River with a nonstop bicycle and pedestrian trail through the 29th Street railroad corridor. The Greenway Coalition, a citizens’ group that leads efforts to promote and improve the Greenway, is seeking a new representative from the Corcoran Neighborhood. Contact CNO to learn more.

Burglary Alert: Protect Your Home and Garage

In August 2006, there was an increase in burglaries in and around the Corcoran Neighborhood. Most home burglaries have occurred during daytime hours, while garage burglaries have been mostly at nighttime. In several burglaries, suspects entered an unlocked door or window, or cut screens or pushed in unsecured air conditioners to enter. One suspect entered an unlocked upstairs window by climbing up on lawn furniture. As always, all loitering, looking in windows, and suspicious behavior should be reported to 911. Walking Patrols Continue on Wednesdays and Sundays

Caring Corcoran Neighbors, CNO’s Safety and Livability Committee, continues to organize walking patrols, and all are welcome to attend. Organizer Kathie Carlson says, “We watch for suspicious activity, pick up trash, and get to know our neighbors.” Both patrols gather at the corner of E. 31st Street and Longfellow Avenue. The Sunday patrol meets at 10:00 am (contact Karen Sorvaag at kksor44@msn.com or 612-296-2582 for more information), and the Wednesday patrol meets at 6:30 pm (contact Kathie Carlson at kjcoreo@aol.com or 612-325-5204 to learn more).
