Mural Project at Cedar Avenue Shell Station to Be Painted This Weekend

Artist and Powderhorn Park resident Elise Kyllo will paint a mural on the Shell gas station at 34th and Cedar this weekend. Kyllo designed the mural, which will feature themes of community and the natural world. CNO was approached by Kyllo to help identify possible mural sites, and donated paint for the project. Neighbors are invited to stop by or lend a hand this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 16–17) from 1–5 pm. A celebration will take place Sunday at 5 pm at the mural site. Residents are invited to bring food or poetry relating to the sun, flowers, bees, community, or art.

34xx Longfellow Avenue Residents Rejuvenate Their Block Club, Partner with MPD

Block Leaders Jim Walsh and Marie Eff hosted a meeting of about 15 neighbors at their home last Saturday, September 9. Residents are concerned about recent increases in loitering and other activity by juveniles in the alleys and around the nearby Shell gas station. Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Skrivseth stressed to attendees the importance of using 911 to report all suspicious, illegal, or threatening behavior. Karen also recommended posting the MPD’s official ‘No Trespassing’ signs where appropriate on private property, as these are enforceable by uniformed officers.

Corcoran’s Coffee Shop to Reopen as 'Riches Kicken’ Café'

Richard Flax, a chef with 30 years experience as a restaurant owner and caterer, has made arrangements to reopen a cafe at 3445 Cedar Avenue South on October 3. The previous shop, known as Coffee Eclectic, changed ownership last year but has recently been closed. Brothers Electric, the adjacent business and owner of the building, has been seeking a new owner for the business. Flax makes several hand-crafted barbeque sauces under his ‘Rich and Spicy’ label, and says his café will feature ribs, soup, sandwiches, and the same fine coffees carried by the previous shop.

Biodiesel Comes to Minneapolis

Pump N' Munch gas station at 63rd and Lyndale Avenue South now offers biodiesel made from soybeans. Biodiesel Blue, the station’s distribution company, supplies their current demand of 600 gallons a day, and the product is grown and manufactured locally. Corcoran resident Krishna Dorney, who has been using the product in his diesel-powered pickup truck, says, “the exhaust smells cleaner than traditional diesel.” For Dorney, biodiesel is an easy choice given the economic, environmental, and health implications of conventional foreign-harvested, non-renewable fuels.
