Neighborhood celebrates public art
Free graffiti prevention now available in Corcoran

PreventionSusan Hensel Gallery was packed with Corcoran residents on Saturday, August 15 for a neighborhood potluck and artists’ reception. Residents mingled with artists who participated in CNO’s recent call for public art to prevent graffiti vandalism. The 24 works received were on display in the gallery, and four winning artists were announced. Each won a $250 prize with the opportunity for an additional royalty to produce their work for installation on neighborhood properties. Corcoran property owners, if you might be interested in having one of the winning designs installed on your property for no cost, please contact Eric at CNO. Holiday gas station to move forward at 36th and Cedar

The Holiday gas station project at 3550 Cedar Ave S (currently home to A to Z Rental) will move forward after a 1-1/2 year hiatus. 41 residents turned out to a meeting with Holiday officials at the CNO office in February 2008, and many residents also weighed in at the March 2008 City Planning Commission meeting, where Holiday's site plan was approved. At the same meeting, Holiday’s bid for 24 hour operation was denied, and Holiday had indicated it would thus walk away from the project. But Holiday officials recently announced they will break ground by September 1 and open for business by 2010. Standard operating hours allowed by the zoning code are 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with closing at 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Rethink eating local and win $40 in farmers’ market tokens

How many miles did your dinner travel? A recent discussion on public radio explored how the distance our food travels from farm to supermarket impacts climate change and our health, and featured James McWilliams, author of Just Food: Where Locavores Get It Wrong and How We Can Truly Eat Responsibly; Michael Pollan, author of In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto; and Brian Halweil, author of Eat Here. Thoughtful eaters can listen to the program here. To get more food for thought, and a chance to win a farmers' market shopping spree, take the Minnesota Energy Challenge at the Midtown Farmers' Market. It's free and takes just a minute to complete, and you'll be entered to win $40 in Market tokens!

Envisioning a permanent Midtown Farmers' Market

Since Minneapolis Public Schools announced it would sell 2225 East Lake Street, the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization has worked hard to foster the best possible outcome. The neighborhood's vision for transit oriented development at 2225 East Lake includes housing, retail, and public open space including a farmers' market. One concrete and immediate result of the Corcoran Midtown Revival Plan was the opening in 2003 of the community-created Midtown Farmers' Market. A new report by CNO recaps recent community efforts to envision a permanent home for the Midtown Farmers' Market in the overall redevelopment of 2225 East Lake.

Volunteers needed for Bicycle and Pedestrian Count

On September 15, Minneapolis Public Works will conduct its annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Count to study the impact of non-motorized travel, in order to better plan and build improvements to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. On Tuesday, Sept. 15, volunteers can sign up for a two-hour time slot to count bicyclists and pedestrians in the area. CNO is helping the City do a focused count on 21st Avenue to and from the Midtown Greenway, and on 32nd Street, a crucial thoroughfare and connection to South High School. To volunteer to help the city and your neighborhood, please contact Eric at CNO or contact Shaun Murphy by e-mail or at (612)275-5128. Learn more about how the counts are used.
