Enjoy National Night Out
Remember the Victims & Help Recovery Efforts, Starting at NNO

Remember the victims. "On National Night Out this year, we are asking that you pause for a moment of silence at 6:05 pm, the time of (last Wednesday's I-35) bridge collapse," says Assistant Chief Sharon Lubinski of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Information needed. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the agency investigating the cause of the bridge collapse, is seeking information from witnesses. Anyone who was on the bridge at the time of the collapse, or anyone who witnessed the collapse, is asked to call the NTSB witness line at 1-866-328-6347 if they have not already been formally interviewed by law enforcement officers.

Help those affected. In response to the bridge collapse, local foundations and organizations have created the Minnesota Helps – Bridge Disaster Fund to collect contributions and direct them to where they are needed most, both immediately and in the coming months. The fund will assist non-profit organizations that help those most affected by the tragedy, including victims, families, and rescuers. To help, visit www.MinnesotaHelps.org.

Rethink Your Commute. If you commute to work by car, especially to downtown or the University of Minnesota, try taking light rail, the bus, or a bicycle to help ease traffic congestion. Metro Transit has added extra buses to several routes to handle increased ridership. Find schedules.

'Living Green Block Talks' to Begin with Workshop and Mural

You are invited to a new series of "Living Green Block Talks" in a back yard near you! Attendees of these free, informal workshops will be able to implement the simple ideas presented -- such as shade trees, efficient lighting, and backyard composting -- for a reduced cost while project funds last. For example, at the first Block Talk this Saturday, August 11, you can learn simple backyard composting. Corcoran attendees may be reimbursed up to $50 to build or buy their own compost system at home. Bring the kids, as we'll paint a community mural about composting (think bugs and worms!) as part of the event. View event details.

Corcoran Mural Project to Begin, Teenage Painters Needed

Eight (8) new mural installations are coming to the Corcoran neighborhood! Teenage painters are needed, although everyone is invited and no experience is necessary. For each mural, the team will collaborate to 1) develop a mural storyline that represents who we are and speaks to the wider neighborhood, and 2) build community through a creative and cooperative project that beautifies, and naturally deters graffiti vandalism. You are invited to the first planning meeting on Tuesday, August 14 at 6:30 pm at Corcoran Park. View event details. The project is made possible by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and Valspar.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Will Screen at Park

The final outdoor movie at Corcoran Park (3334 20th Ave S) this year will be screened on Wednesday, August 8. Activities start at 7:30 pm, and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (rated PG) starts at 9:00. The movie is free, and snacks and ice cream are available for a small cost. Bring a blanket to sit on.

Midtown Farmers' Market Committee to Meet

Each month, a volunteer advisory committee of the Midtown Market meets at CNO (3451 Cedar Ave S). Their next meeting is this Wednesday, August 8 at 6:30 pm. The committee plans events, works with the media, does community outreach, raises funds, and helps to set policy and direction for the market. To learn more, contact Market Manager Joanna Stone by e-mail or at 612-724-7457.
