Migrating birds, 35 volunteers transform Lake Street at Longfellow Avenue

Young Muralists35 volunteers led by artist Elise Kyllo transformed the corner building at Lake Street and Longfellow Avenue last Saturday. The new mural depicts several birds that migrate between Minnesota and Latin America, painted in the style of the San Blas Mola, an indigenous style of art found in Panama. Most of the volunteers live on the blocks immediately adjacent to the new mural, or from elsewhere in the Corcoran and Powderhorn Park neighborhoods. Thank you, volunteers!

Celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5

Don't miss National Night Out on the evening of Tuesday, August 5. A whopping 18 individual events are registered in the Corcoran neighborhood! To find an event near you, visit the NNO website and click on "Registered Events List." CNO will visit National Night Out. Instead of inviting neighborhood residents to a General Membership meeting in August, the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization is coming to residents. CNO staff and board members will try to visit each registered National Night Out event in the neighborhood.

3-day event will accept household hazardous wastes

Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis will hold a community collection event to help county residents safely and properly dispose of unwanted garden and household hazardous waste, including fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, pesticides, electronics, fuels, aerosol cans, paint, and batteries. The event will be held Aug. 7th through 9th from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m. in the Pillsbury/Bottineau School parking lot, 2231 Garfield St. N.E., Minneapolis. Click here to learn more about the event and what is accepted.

Weigh in on the future of the Hi-Minn corridor at NNO

The Minnehaha-Hiawatha corridor from the Midtown Greenway to Minnehaha Parkway has received increasing attention in recent years. This spring Hennepin County launched a two-year effort to develop a Strategic Development Framework for the corridor to guide revitalization investments. As part of National Night Out, the Community Advisory Committee for this effort partnered with the Minneapolis Police Department to provide NNO event planners with a one-question survey for NNO attendees. At your NNO event, please ask about the survey, give your input, and encourage others to do the same. To learn more visit www.minnehaha-hiawatha.com.

Become a Friend of the Market to sustain fresh, local flavor

If you're reading this article, chances are you support the Midtown Farmers' Market. What you may not know is that vendor fees pay just a third of the cost to run the Market. The remainder comes from foundation grants, sponsorships, and donations from supporters like you. Please become a Friend of the Market by donating $25 or more. Make a one-time or recurring donation at the Market, on the Market website, or at the CNO office. In addition, we need volunteers each week to help set up and tear down the market. Other volunteer opportunities are also available! To learn more, contact Market Manager Laura Wolff at 612-724-7457.
