Challenge yourself and win a farmers’ market shopping spree

Choosing locally-grown food has benefits for the eater, for the grower, for the community, and for our world. Reducing the miles your food must travel between the soil and your kitchen table lowers your footprint on the planet. To get more food for thought, and a chance to win a farmers' market shopping spree, take the Minnesota Energy Challenge at the Midtown Farmers' Market. It's free and takes just a minute to complete, and you'll be entered to win $40 in Market tokens! Even if you've already taken the Challenge, sign up again at the Market for a chance to win. Lower your footprint further by walking or biking to the Market, and by bringing a durable shopping bag.

Make your farmers’ market rich and famous in under 30 seconds

The good news: of the 4,000+ farmers markets nationwide, the Midtown Farmers’ Market currently ranks #9 in Local Harvest’s “love your farmers market” contest. The bad news: there’s no prize for 9th place. Help Midtown win $5,000 while making a statement that it deserves a permanent home at its location of 7 seasons! Simply vote here (it takes about 20 seconds), and then forward the link to friends and family and tell them to vote! Post it on your Facebook page or another personal site. Make Midtown #1! The market happens 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturdays through October at 2225 East Lake.

Powderhorn Art Fair Celebrates art and community August 8-9

The fair takes place Saturday, August 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, August 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed on both days for a variety of roles. To volunteer, contact Cyndi at 612-543-2232.

Foreign students seek host families in your neighborhood

The University of Minnesota will welcome 30 students from China to attend a full time study program this fall. The U seeks warm, loving host families for the students in Corcoran and other neighborhoods convenient to campus. Families will be paid a monthly stipend of $400 per student. For more information contact Adri Melander by e-mail or at 952-927-7221.

CNO will visit NNO events to seek your input and involvement

A whopping 20 National Night Out events are registered in the Corcoran neighborhood so far! To find an Aug. 4 event near you, visit the NNO website and click on "Registered Events List." Instead of inviting neighborhood residents to a General Membership meeting in August, CNO staff and board members will try to visit each National Night Out event in the neighborhood. On another note: master gardeners are available to attend your block event with advice on keeping your yard beautiful during drought. Contact Sean at 612-331-1099 x1 by July 31.

Corcoran News team seeks neighborhood news, volunteers

Get the unedited version of neighborhood news. Get the inside scoop. Each month a team of volunteers gathers to choose the stories that will appear in your neighborhood paper. Get involved by sharing an idea, writing a story, taking some photos, or helping with layout. The team meets again on Monday, August 10 at 6:30 p.m. at CNO. Everyone is invited.
