Wanted: new ways to prevent graffiti. Reward: $500

In June, CNO published a “call for art” seeking new ideas to prevent graffiti vandalism on garages and fences near you. The best ideas will win up to $500 while helping to combat graffiti. CNO will take these ideas “on the road” on National Night Out, gathering feedback from residents, who will pick the winners. The goal is to make more properties graffiti-proof, and to show people how cheap and easy graffiti prevention can be. If there’s enough interest, CNO will mass-produce the best new ideas and make them available to neighborhood property owners for no cost. Want to win $500? You don’t need to be an artist or a Corcoran resident to enter the competition. Guidelines here.

Shut down your street and throw a party with neighbors

Have you ever wanted to party in the middle of your street? On one night each year called National Night Out, Minneapolis residents can do it, and they can close the street for free. All you need is verbal permission from 75% of neighbors, but you must apply by July 21. NNO street closure costs $100 beginning July 22 and is not available after July 30. To register your event and apply for street closure, visit the Minneapolis NNO website or call 3-1-1. And remember, you don’t need to close the street to have a great block event. Please contact Eric at CNO for help with door-knocking, flyers, or finding others on your block who want to help plan a block event. National Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 4.

At the other end of the Corcoran neighborhood, a new artisan market is about to open on Saturday, July 18. Organized by Van Brabson Gallery, 3600 Cedar Ave S, the artisan market will feature all types of artwork including handcrafted jewelry, paintings, handcrafted artcards, handmade paper, and more. The artisan market will happen Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 3600 Cedar Ave S through October 3. Space is available for artists on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Bonnie Brabson at 612-298-6002.

Are you equipped to prevent crime? Free training July 20

The Minneapolis Police Department says that an organized block is the best defense against crime. The Corcoran Neighborhood Organization tends to agree. That’s why CNO encourages all residents to attend the MPD’s free 2-hour block leader training, held periodically at the 3rd Precinct office, 3000 Minnehaha Ave S. The next block leader training will be held on Monday, July 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please RSVP to Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch by calling 612-673-2856. Learn to solve problems on your block, leverage the power of neighbors, and more.
