Weigh in on high voltage lines along Greenway or Corcoran's 31st Street

High VoltageResidents have until July 10 to submit comments to the State of Minnesota regarding what should be included in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that will be used to evaluate Xcel Energy’s proposed Hiawatha Project. The project would build new substations and high voltage transmission lines in south Minneapolis, and Xcel’s preferred routing is above the Midtown Greenway bicycle and pedestrian trail. Readers, please note that another possible routing identified by Xcel is along East 31st Street through the Corcoran neighborhood. On June 18, over 100 people, including residents, business owners, elected officials and community groups, attended a public meeting to share comments on the EIS scope. Many concerns and questions were raised at the hearing, such as why Xcel didn’t coordinate the Hiawatha Project with the recent reconstruction of Lake Street, and the impact overhead transmission lines might have on human health, property values, and economic development along the selected routing.

Comments submitted until July 10 will shape what is studied by state officials in the EIS. There will be additional public comment opportunities later on, regarding the Draft EIS, a hearing before a judge, and finally the route permit approval by the Public Utilities Commission. Watch this newsletter for more information.

Comments on the scope of the EIS should be submitted to: Bill.storm@state.mn.us. To review the draft outline of the EIS, click here. More information on the Hiawatha Project can be found at Xcel's website, and at the Greenway Coalition's website.

Weigh in on the possible 31st Street routing through your neighborhood organization. CNO has joined the Greenway Coalition, the City of Minneapolis, and Hennepin County in opposing the Greenway routing, but has yet to reach consensus on the possible 31st Street routing. On Monday, July 20, 6:00 p.m. at CNO, Corcoran’s Land Use and Transportation committee will discuss the possible 31st Street routing and will consider taking a position on the matter. All Corcoran community members are invited to participate. Please contact Eric at CNO with questions.

Close the street for free on National Night Out

National Night Out is Tuesday, August 4. While you certainly don't have to close your street to have a block party, NNO is the one time each year when Minneapolis residents can close their street for free, with verbal permission of 75% of neighbors. July 21 is the deadline for free street closure, which costs $100 beginning July 22 and is not available after July 30. To register your event and apply for street closure, visit the Minneapolis NNO website or call 3-1-1. Do you need help organizing a block event? Please contact Eric at CNO for help with door-knocking, flyers, or finding others on your block who want to help plan a block event.

There are ten gardens on the tour, each with a different theme: Vertical Gardening, Paths of Discovery, Country Meets City, Urban Retreat, Container Gardens, Four Season Interest, Woodland Retreat, Sanctuary Garden, Low Maintenance Gardening and Farmhouse in the City. The price for the entire tour is $15 per person when you purchase tickets prior to July 11. Buy tickets at this link.

Local website connects gardenless gardeners to gardens

A new local website called Yards to Gardens connects people who are looking for gardening space with people who have available space. The Victory Gardens of World War II, at their peak, produced 44% of the produce that Americans consumed. Since then we’ve built a food system where the average meal travels 1500 miles and changes hands 6 times from farm to fork, and where it takes 10 calories of fossil fuel to manufacture 1 calorie of food. By using Yards to Gardens, you can not only help to fight climate change by producing food at home, you also plant the seeds for a safer and stronger neighborhood by building healthy relationships in your community.
