New Corcoran Resident Moved 15 Miles Without Gasoline

Human Powered MoveThere was no moving van involved in Karl Stoerzinger's move from Inver Grove Heights to the Corcoran neighborhood last month. In fact, there were no cars or gasoline used at all. With help from 18 trailers and over 20 friends, Karl moved all of his worldly possessions from his old home to the new using bicycle power. When asked why he chose such unconventional means for moving, Karl explained, "We got a lot of looks, waves, stares, honks, and shouts along the way. We certainly impacted these people in some manner." Karl says he is not "anti-car," but wishes more people would use bicycles rather than cars for commuting and simple errands. "This is the kind of inspiration," he says, "that I want to try to distribute in any way that I can."

Residents Eat, Share Ideas at NNO Planning Barbeque

The June 21 Planning Barbeque at Corcoran Park drew 60 people who shared ideas about planning a National Night Out event on their block on Tuesday, August 7. NNO is your best opportunity this year to strengthen the neighbor-to-neighbor connections that prevent crime. Ideas shared were as simple as root beer floats and sidewalk chalk. If you missed the barbeque and need some ideas, or if you want help finding others to help plan your event, contact Eric at CNO at 612-724-7457. Stop in the CNO office (3451 Cedar Ave S) to pick up a free packet of NNO planning materials. Learn more about National Night Out.

Volunteers and Food Needed for July 14 Green Sweep

Corcoran's annual Clean Sweep -- soon to be known as 'Green Sweep' -- will happen on Saturday, July 14. Volunteers and food are needed! Green Sweep offers help disposing of nonhazardous junk that cannot be reused, sold, or given away. Volunteers load these materials into trucks and haul them to the Southside Transfer Station. Loading is physical work, and not for everybody. However, we also need an event receptionist to answer phones, we need food servers, and we need drivers. And we need food to feed our hungry volunteers! Contact Eric at CNO at 612-724-7457 to volunteer or learn more. Have junk? Read more...
