Share Ideas and Food at a National Night Out Planning Barbeque

image by Peter JaegerAh, National Night Out: one of the best opportunities to build the neighbor-to-neighbor relationships that prevent crime and make city life great. This week -- June 18 to 24 -- is NNO Planning Week. That means it's time to start planning your August 7 National Night Out block party with neighbors. Does the thought of planning a block party sound overwhelming? Or do you just need some ideas or motivation?

If so, you're in luck! Head to Corcoran Park this Thursday, June 21 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm for a free 6-neighborhood NNO Planning Barbeque. All residents, from the NNO novice to the old pros, are invited to enjoy free food and share ideas. Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch will be on hand, as will staff from your neighborhood organization. Please bring a lawn chair. Food will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite summer dish to share. Contact Eric at CNO for more details. View event flyer here. Learn more about National Night Out here. Mini Murals Will Spruce Up Corcoran, Help Needed

Kids and adults are invited to paint their own mini-mural today (June 19) at a free outdoor workshop from 4:00 to 8:00 at Corcoran Park (3334 20th Ave S). Mini-murals can be mounted to a wall or garage to beautify and to deter graffiti vandalism.

The six existing mini-murals on the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization building (3451 Cedar Ave S) will be replaced with some of tonight's new creations on Wednesday, June 27 from 1:00 to 8:00 pm. Volunteers and food are needed for this day of re-painting and sprucing up the CNO building. To volunteer or inquire, contact Amy at CNO.

Get Involved with the Minneapolis Police Department

Precinct Advisory Councils (PACs) are made up of volunteer citizens. The role of the PAC is to support police crime fighting and prevention activities. The next meeting of the 3rd Precinct Advisory Council is this Monday, June 25. Learn more.

The Citizens Academy is another opportunity. Participating residents learn about the Police Department and meet officers. A fall class will meet on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 to 9:00 pm from September 5th through November 7th, in North Minneapolis. The registration deadline is August 22, but early registration is encouraged as the limited openings are filling fast. To learn more, click here.
