Movies in the Park Begin Tomorrow on A Big Screen Movies in the Park kicks off tomorrow evening, June 13 at 7:30 pm in Corcoran Park (3334 20th Ave S). The family-friendly movies are free, and will be shown on an outdoor big screen in the Park on the second Wednesday of each month. An ice cream social with food and fun activities begins at 7:30, and the sceening begins at 8:30. Bring a blanket to sit on. View 'Movies' flyer here. |
Farmers' Market Advisory Committee to Meet Wednesday Each month on the second Wednesday, a volunteer advisory committee of the Midtown Farmers' Market meets at CNO (3451 Cedar Ave S). Everyone is invited to help plan the market by participating on the committee. The next meeting is this Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 pm. The market committee plans events, works with the media, does community outreach, raises funds, and helps to set policy and direction for the market. More hands are also needed for market day volunteer shifts -- to help with setup and tear down, and to collect e-mail addresses and talk to shoppers about upcoming events. Witness The Flowering of the Light This Weekend Local Aztec Dance group KetzalCoaltlicue invites you to a Vigil this Friday night (9:00 pm, 3547 Cedar Ave S) and a Saturday morning dance ceremony (11:00 am, Corcoran Park, 3334 20th Ave S). Celebrating the event commonly known as the summer solstice, the ceremony is dedicated to the natural movement of the sun and its effects on soil and plant life. Aztec dance is a traditional cultural form that survived the Spanish invasion of Mexico. KetzalCoaltlicue (Divine Serpent of the Earth) is the only Traditional Aztec Dance Kalpulli (learning community) in Minnesota. Its directors include Corcoran’s own Susana de León. Both events are free, and attendees may bring water, fruit, candles or flowers for the ceremony. |
Take a Guided Tour of the Eco-Yard This Saturday Learn about environmentally friendly, sustainable landscaping from a landscape restoration specialist at a free tour of the Eco-Yard Midtown this Saturday. The Eco-Yard demonstrates how to incorporate low maintenance lawn, trees and shrubs, prairie, bird and butterfly gardens, a grass swale and rainwater garden into an urban landscape. These plantings require little water, and no polluting fertilizers or pesticides. The tours are scheduled for 10:00 am to noon on Saturday June 16, July 14, and August 11. The Eco-Yard is located at 2801 21st Ave S next to the Green Institute. The tours are free, but attendees are encouraged to pre-register at this link or by calling Hennepin County Environmental Services: 612-348-9266. |

Land Use & Transportation / Housing to Meet Monday CNO's Land Use & Transportation / Housing Committees will convene jointly this Monday, June 18 at 6:00 pm at CNO. The agenda will include discussion of grassroots remedies to vacant & boarded housing, an update on the vacant 3-acre "31st Street Triangle" parcel up for auction by the Metropolitan Council, and a variance request for a proposed new home at 3448 20th Ave S, where a burned fourplex left a vacant plot of land last year. All Corcoran residents and business owners are welcome. |

Come to a free Six-Neighborhood NNO Planning Barbeque at Corcoran Park (3334 20th Ave S) on Thursday, June 21st at 6:30 pm to share food and ideas on planning a block party. Get information on how it’s free and easy to register a block party or apply for a permit to close the street. Find out what other blocks do. Everyone’s welcome, from the inexperienced to the old pros. There will be some food and drink provided, but feel free to bring more food to grill or share, and please bring a lawn chair if you can.
