EPA Proposes Cleanup Plan for Remaining Arsenic Contamination

Arsenic Clean UpSoil contaminated with arsenic will be removed from neighborhood properties where testing found greater than 25 milligrams arsenic per kilogram of soil. This proposed plan will be presented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at a community meeting on Wednesday, June 11, 6:30 pm at the Midtown YWCA, 2121 E. Lake St.

The EPA's proposed cleanup plan builds on the 197 residential properties cleaned up so far where testing found greater than 95 mg/kg concentrations, the initial cleanup threshold that aimed to address short-term health risks. Cleanup is accomplished by replacement of contaminated soil. The cleanup area includes a number of neighborhoods near East 28th Street and Hiawatha Avenue, where from 1938 to 1968, a pesticide containing arsenic was manufactured at a factory that has since been removed. Arsenic from the site, now referred to as the "CMC Heartland Lite Yard," was carried by wind to adjacent properties. In 2007, the EPA added the site to its Superfund National Priorities List.
