Join the Mural Team Saturday, May 24

MuralEverybody is invited to help create a mural on Saturday, May 24 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The project site is a residential garage right on East 34th Street, between 19th and Longfellow Avenues, just half a block west of Corcoran Park. Come for an hour or stay the whole day. No art skills are required, just a desire to be part of a community project. The installation is part of Corcoran's Youth Murals project led by artist and teacher Elise Kyllo. Over 220 people helped create 7 murals in Corcoran in 2007, and the project will continue through this summer. In case of rain, we'll try it again on Sunday, May 25 at the same time.

Bored with the murals project? Invent your own project to prevent graffiti this year. Thanks to the Valspar Foundation, CNO has free paint for Corcoran residents for graffiti cleanup, garage murals, or creative ideas yet to be invented. We can order paint in any color or match an existing color...contact Eric at CNO to learn more.

Legislature funds neighborhoods, but City retains discretion

The state legislature ended its session with a tax omnibus bill that would support 'neighborhood revitalization' in Minneapolis, but without specifying the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP), the primary funding source of Minneapolis' neighborhood organizations including CNO. Both 'neighborhood revitalization purposes' and the City of Minneapolis' debt on the Target Center would be eligible to receive the funding generated through newly established 'redevelopment districts,' but the City Council would control how many dollars, if any, go toward each. The new districts are projected to generate about $12 million in annual revenue through 2020. The original tax districts established by the legislature in the late 1980s were explicitly dedicated to the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. Be part of the 3-Neighborhood Garage Sale on Saturday, June 14

Plan your own garage sale on June 14th, and the Neighborhoods handle publicity, including advertising in the StarTribune and other local media. We'll also provide a free lawn sign for your event. Friday, June 6 is the last day to submit your sale for inclusion on the “Garage Sale Map and Guide.” Call SENA at 612-721-1601 to have your sale included. Each year we hand out over 600 sale maps to eager shoppers. Last year 101 individual garage sales took place and brought over $19,000 into the neighborhoods. Now entering its sixth year, the Neighborhood Garage Sale is held rain or shine. The free map and guide to all of the sales will be available from 8:45 to 3:00 on June 14th at neighborhood locations including Firefly Café and the Midtown Farmers' Market.
