Be part of the 3-Neighborhood Garage Sale on Saturday, June 13

Garage SaleThe largest neighborhood garage sale in Minneapolis returns on Saturday, June 13! The annual Standish, Ericsson, and Corcoran Neighborhood Garage Sale is a community-wide event that extends from Lake Street to the Minnehaha Parkway, and from Cedar Avenue to Hiawatha Avenue.

Individual households will set up their own sales at their homes, and SENA & CNO will take care of the publicity, including advertising in the StarTribune, press releases to area newspapers and other media, and inclusion of all participating sales in a "Sales Guide" and map. To be added to the list of sales and to the map, simply call the SENA office at 721-1601 by Friday, June 5th. We will ask you for your address and the type of merchandise being sold at your sale. We’ll add this information to the map and guide to all sales, available free to all shoppers on the day of the sale.

Last year’s event involved over 130 households, brought approximately $25,000 into the neighborhoods, and recycled thousands of items. The Neighborhood Garage Sale is held rain or shine.

The free "Sales Guide" and map to all of the sales will be available from 8:45 to 3:00 on June 13th at neighborhood locations including the Midtown Farmers' Market at Lake & 22nd and A Cup A Joe cafe at 3445 Cedar Ave S.

If you aren't able to sell or give away your unwanted treasures, mark your calendar for the annual neighborhood Green Sweep, just one week later on Saturday, June 20...see more below.

Mark your calendar for annual Green Sweep event

Volunteers, food, and junk are needed! Corcoran's annual Green Sweep event (also known as Clean Sweep) will happen on Saturday, June 20 this year, and volunteers and food are needed! Green Sweep helps Corcoran residents dispose of non-hazardous junk that cannot be reused, sold, or given away. The materials should be left at the alley and marked clearly. Green Sweep volunteers load these materials into trucks and haul them to the Southside Transfer Station. Learn more about getting rid of unwanted stuff here, and please contact Eric at CNO to sign up as a Green Sweep volunteer.

Join a Corcoran gardening group, and a "seedy" event

A growing group of gardeners is gearing up to plant seeds in the neighborhood. If you'd like to get involved with a community garden effort underway in Corcoran, please contact Eric at CNO to get involved. Also, on Saturday, May 23 join neighbors for a hands-on demonstration about seed balling from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the garden next to Susan Hensel Gallery, 3441 Cedar Ave S. Seed balling is an effective, organic method to directly sow seeds into garden beds. Facilitated by Russ Henry of Giving Tree Gardens. Please RSVP to Russ at 612-227-0115.

Free breakfast for Bike/Walk to Work Day, May 14

The Green Institute and other tenants of the Eco-Enterprise Center at 2801 21st Ave S will offer free breakfast and Peace Coffee on the building's green roof, from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 14. The event is intended to promote the ongoing Twin Cities Bike Walk Week. Mayor Rybak will be on hand, and the Hub Bike Co-op will be there offering a free bike check clinic.

Bike thefts are up, so keep yours safe from thieves

Bicycle theft is on the rise in south Minneapolis. Hub Bike Co-op worker-owner Christopher Cross offers some advice: Bike theft is a crime of opportunity, so park and lock up your bike only in well-lit, visible areas. If possible, avoid storing your bike in an outdoor or visible location overnight. Use only a U-lock, not a cable-style lock, but note that even some U-lock designs have been theft-prone. For more advice on bike locks, stop in a local bike shop and talk to the experts.

A Cup A Joe cafe celebrates Grand Opening
