Biomass project faces setback

BurnerMarch 30, 2008 was a key deadline for Midtown Eco Energy, the proposed wood-burning heat and power project that would re-purpose the former garbage incinerator at 2850 20th Ave S owned by the City of Minneapolis. By March 30, developer Kandiyohi Development Partners needed to demonstrate a commitment from a power company to purchase the electricity generated by Midtown Eco Energy. The City of Minneapolis was prepared to sell the facility and land to Kandiyohi for the project if this and other conditions were met. However, while the developer demonstrated they have been in negotiations with Xcel Energy, the City has ruled that a commitment was not in place by the deadline, and is therefore proceeding to cancel the sale option. The City Council had previously voted to extend the deadline of the sale option. Council Member Gary Schiff, whose Ninth Ward includes the proposed project site, has stated he will not support any further extensions for sale of the facility to Kandiyohi.

Conserve energy, win "makeover" for your home

The Center for Energy and Environment is seeking a Minnesota homeowner to help demonstrate how making home energy improvements can save money and help the environment. Ten finalists will receive a complete energy analysis, an estimated $600 value. One Grand Prize winner will receive up to $15,000 worth of energy efficiency improvements. A random drawing will distribute a variety of other prizes including certificates toward energy star appliances, programmable thermostats, appliance energy meters and more. Complete the free application at www.mnenergychallenge.org by describing why your home should be selected for the Makeover Contest. The deadline is May 15.

Get together with neighbors, get green rewards

Block club meetings and neighborly gatherings are popular activities in the Corcoran neighborhood. CNO is helping encourage these gatherings by offering "green rewards" valued at $50 or $100 to participants, thanks to some grant dollars. You don't need any special expertise to hold a "green" block gathering, just a topic of interest such as sustainable gardening, waste reduction, shade trees, changing light bulbs to compact fluorescents (CFLs), composting, or even line-drying clothes. Contact Eric at CNO if you have an idea for a block gathering that needs a reward. CNO staff are also available to help with other issues on your block, or problem addresses. E-mail or call us.
