Proposed Holiday gas station gets approvals, denials

At last week's public hearing, the City Planning Commission supported the verbal testimony of numerous neighborhood residents and CNO staff to deny Holiday's request for 24-hour operation at the gas station and car wash proposed for 3550 Cedar Ave S, and to deny Holiday's subsequent request for hours extended to 1:00 am on weekends. Therefore, the station will be limited to a closing time of 10:00 pm, and 11:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. However, the resident/CNO plea to reject the 36th Street curb cut, citing concerns for safety and traffic, was defeated by Holiday's argument that the driveway will be necessary for the exit of fuel delivery trucks from the station. The testimony of CNO staff followed resolutions by the CNO board, which reflected the input of 41 attendees of a Feb. 12 community meeting at the CNO office, most of whom were residents on adjoining blocks.

CNO Board will elect new members on May 5

New CNO board members, including Chair and Secretary, will be elected to represent Corcoran at a May 5 Election and General Membership meeting, 6:00 pm at Corcoran Park. Serving on the board is fun and hard work, very rewarding, always interesting, and requires a commitment to our community, but no previous experience is required. Contact Amy at CNO for more information. At its monthly meetings the CNO board, a group of volunteers elected from the neighborhood, reviews and votes on committee recommendations and other issues and thus determines policy for the organization. To vote in the May 5 Election & General Membership meeting, one must have attended one GM meeting in the last twelve months, or register in person at the CNO office one month prior to the vote. On Monday, March 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, attend a free training to learn skills for effectively working with your neighbors and the Police Department. These periodic trainings are led by Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch. The training will be held at the 3rd Precinct at 3000 Minnehaha Ave. Topics will include how to organize a block or apartment club, services of the Minneapolis Police Department, responsibilities of a crime prevention block leader, how and when to use 911 and how to solve problems effectively. Please call 612-673-2856 to RSVP for the training.

Crime alert: broken car windows at night

During the nighttime hours between March 5 and 23, there were 25 reported cases of car windows being broken between 2nd Ave to Hiawatha, and Lake St to E. 42nd St. If you park on the street, park in well-lit areas. Call 911 if you see suspicious behavior, and report all vandalism and theft, even if you did not observe the crime. Reports can be placed by calling 311. Reporting is important because it may be possible to identify patterns and increase patrols through accumulated information. Finally, light up the neighborhood—keep your outside lights on.
