Feb. 1 Dinner will honor remarkable citizens and neighborhood improvements

Don't miss the Volunteer Recognition Dinner to enjoy a meal, conversation with neighbors, and inspirational remarks by volunteers toasting the Volunteer of the Year award nominees! This free event will also feature dinner as well as presentation of the Dorothy LaDue Lifetime Volunteer award by Dorothy herself. Bring the family! It all begins at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 1 at the Corcoran Park building, 3334 20th Ave S. Contact the CNO office with questions, and see you there! Art sled rally happens at Powderhorn Park on Jan. 30

There's no cooler event in south Minneapolis this winter! Watch the antics of outrageous never-tried-before art sleds, or participate with a unique contraption of your own. Each sled and its creator will take to a decorated hill accompanied by throngs of spectators. Live music, a warming tent, hot chocolate and coffee will round out the afternoon’s activities. It all happens on Saturday, January 30, 2:00 p.m. at Powderhorn Park, 34th Street and 15th Avenue South. More here.

News team invites writers, photographers on Feb. 8

The volunteer team that puts together your Corcoran News paper will reconvene on Monday, Feb. 8, 6:30 p.m. at CNO to begin work on the March issue. Get involved by writing a story, interviewing a neighbor, or taking a photograph to share. The news team meetings are a great way to find out what's happening in the 'hood--the unedited version! Public meeting set on potential impact of power lines Feb. 10

A public meeting will address the high-voltage power lines and substations that Xcel plans to build through south Minneapolis neighborhoods. Possible overhead routings include the Midtown Greenway or through Corcoran along East 31st Street. The meeting, 6:00 p.m. on Wed., February 10 at Plaza Verde, 1516 E. Lake St., will gather comments on a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) recently published by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Find the draft EIS on the DOC's website or stop by the CNO office, East Lake library, or Roosevelt library to review a paper copy.

Get involved in a new community garden in Standish on Feb. 10

As Corcoran residents continue to explore possible garden sites within Corcoran's geographic boundaries (contact Eric at CNO to learn more), a new community garden will break ground this spring in the Standish neighborhood, at 32nd Avenue and 41st Street, and seeks participants from the area. To learn more or get involved, stop by the community meeting on February 10, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Multi-purpose room, Lake Hiawatha Recreation Center, 2701 East 44th St. You can also contact coordinator Sarah Claassen at the Land Stewardship Project by calling 612-722-6377.

Residents will hear Wellington's development plans on Feb. 15

The land use & transportation / housing committee will host Wellington Management at its next regular monthly meeting (3rd Mondays) on Feb. 15 at 6:00 p.m. at CNO. Wellington owns and plans to develop over 100 units of rental housing on the vacant, 2-acre parcel at 3100 Hiawatha Ave. All Corcoran residents are invited to participate and/or become voting members of the committee. City of Minneapolis offers free sand to residents

The City offers several sites where residents can pick-up free sand for their residential sidewalks. Locations are open 24-hours-a-day. Bring your own pail and shovel to E. 27th Street, just east of Longfellow Avenue near the Public Works gate; 3607 E. 44th St. (between Snelling Ave. and the railroad tracks); 1809 Washington St. NE (18th & Jefferson); 6036 Harriet Ave. S. (on West 60th Street between Lyndale & Harriet); or 198 Aldrich Ave. N.
