Latinos en Acción Helps Residents Connect to Culture, Each Other

Latinos en Acción (LEA) recently organized two buses with 55 Latino residents and business owners from the Lake Street area and 15 students from South High School's Unidos Latino group to attend the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Walker Art Center. "This represented an opportunity to expose residents to the work of a well-known Mexican artist being celebrated at an important local cultural institution," said LEA organizer Tina Tavera.

According to Tavera, many of the residents were not aware of the museum's educational programming, free visiting dates, and sculpture garden open to the public. "These sorts of cultural events help establish trust and build long-term relationships," she added. The community cultural programming has generated participation in a LEA-organized Latina Women's Group that meets Thursdays from 10am to 1pm at Powderhorn Park. The women have also begun an aerobics program in Spanish that exercises on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm-2pm.

Latinos en Acción (LEA) is a program of the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization (CNO) in partnership with Longfellow Community Council (LCC) and the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA). For more information contact Tina Tavera at 612-724-7457.
