Almost 10 acres of land is slated for development adjacent to the light rail station in the Corcoran neighborhood. How can residents shape development to be more green?

Mr. William Weber from the Center for Sustainable Building Research will facilitate a 2-part training and goal setting series with CNO's Land Use & Transportation / Housing Committee. All Corcoran residents are invited to participate or join the committee in 2010. The upcoming trainings will cover:

What is "sustainable"? The basics of what makes buildings green.
Focusing on goals rather than technologies and buzz words.
Setting green goals as a committee.
Communicating goals to a developer.
Strategies for shaping projects.

Session 1: Monday, Jan. 11 at 6:00 p.m. at CNO. Session 2: Monday, Jan. 25 at 6:00 p.m. at CNO.

Cedar Ave Holiday gas station to open Jan. 7

A new Holiday gas station will open for business at 36th and Cedar on January 7. After a well-attended meeting of over 40 residents with Holiday officials at CNO in early 2008 and a well-attended March 2008 City Planning Commission meeting, where Holiday's bid for 24 hour operation was denied, the project was put on hold. But in Fall 2009 Holiday officials announced they would move forward under standard operating hours allowed by the City of Minneapolis zoning code: 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with closing at 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Public lecture on home-scale permaculture Jan. 7

Are you longing to get back in the garden? Minneapolis' soil is frozen solid, but warmer conversations about gardening, local food, and related topics continue. A January 7 author lecture at the U of M will deal with permaculture for northern climates. The Permaculture Research Institute Cold Climate presents a lecture by Toby Hemenway, author of the groundbreaking book Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture. Recycle your unwanted holiday lights until Jan. 10

The Recycling Association of Minnesota has recycled 15,000 pounds of unwanted holiday lights since December 3rd. There's still time to recycle your unwanted or broken lights rather than send them to the landfill. Drop off your unwanted holiday lights at various Minneapolis locations including Snyder Drug at 4626 Nicollet Ave S. until January 10. Learn more and find locations at this website.

MPS Community Education will offer Wellfest sessions Jan. 9

Minneapolis Public Schools Community Education will host a free "Wellfest" event on Saturday, January 9, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at South High School, 3131 19th Ave S. Participate in a variety sessions, which are condensed versions of classes offered through Community Education, including yoga, belly dancing, cooking with whole grains, salsa dancing, and more.

Become a Block Leader at free training Jan. 14

Make a New Years' resolution to be a block leader! The Minneapolis Police Department's free Block Leader Training returns Thursday, January 14 at the MPD 3rd Precinct, 3000 Minnehaha Ave S. The course includes an introduction to community crime prevention, how to organize a block/apartment club, how and when to use 911, how to solve problems effectively, and more. You must RSVP to Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch to attend this training by calling 612-673-2856. An organized block is the best defense against crime!

Nominate an outstanding Corcoran volunteer by Jan. 15

Do you know an outstanding volunteer in the Corcoran neighborhood? Nominate a neighbor who contributes to our community by submitting the nominee's name, your name, and a brief statement about what the nominee has done for the neighborhood. Send to Amy Behrens at CNO by January 15! CNO will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Corcoran Park building at 6:00 p.m. The dinner and program will feature food and an awards ceremony honoring Corcoran's Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Volunteer.

Minneapolis - St. Paul Home Tour applications due Jan. 21

The 2010 Minneapolis & Saint Paul Home Tour is looking for homes for the annual Tour. Applications are due January 21, 2010. The Tour, in its 23rd year, will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25, 2010. For more information, call Tour Coordinator Margo Ashmore at 612-673-5103 or email her at link@nrp.org. Prevent wintertime auto theft and idling fines

Leaving your car running while you're inside could be a costly mistake. According to the Minneapolis Police, it only takes seconds to break a window or jimmy the door lock. Furthermore, it's against City ordinance to leave your key in the ignition while you're not in your car, and officers may issue tickets to vehicles running with no driver present. Running your car to keep it warm may leave you in the cold!
